Ja Morant Career
On November 10, 2017, Morant made his debut for Murray State in a 118-61 victory over Brescia University of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He finished with 7 points and a team-high 11 assists. On December 12, 2017, in a 69-55 loss against Saint Louis, he notched his first double-double of his career with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists.
On December 28, he recorded his first triple-double, beating Eastern Illinois 80–52 with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 14 assists. It was also the most assists at a CFSB Centre game, breaking the previous record of 12 set by Aubrey Reese versus Alabama State in 1999. It was the second triple-double in school history, the first coming from Isacc Miles in 1984.
Morant also had the third-most assists by a Murray State player in a single game. He scored a season-high 23 points against Southeast Missouri State on February 1st, 2018. Along with teammates Terrell Miller and Jonathan Stark, Morant was named to the OVC All-Newcomer Team after averaging 12.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game.
In his rookie season, his 6.3 assists per game ranked 14th in the country. He racked up 150 assists, 150 rebounds, and 10 blocks while shooting at least 42 percent from the field, becoming him the seventh freshman to do it in 25 years. In his first season, Murray State and Morant won the OVC Championship by defeating Belmont 68-51, advancing them to the NCAA Tournament.
Some scouts started to notice Ja Morant during the summer of his sophomore year in 2018. Twenty players were selected to attend Chris Paul’s Elite Guard Camp, which Morant described as “an honour.” After Terrell Miller and Jonathan Stark left Murray State at the start of his second season, Morant took over as the team’s captain.
In his first game of the year, he outscored Wright State 74-53 with 26 points and 11 assists. In a 77-66 victory over Missouri State on November 24, 2018, Morant tallied 29 points, a season-high 13 rebounds, and 12 assists, becoming the first Murray State player to ever register multiple triple-doubles.
He then lost against Alabama 78-72, scoring a season-high 38 points, which ranks as the 12th-highest single-game total in school history. Morant was nearly universally predicted to go in the top five picks in the 2019 NBA lottery by approximately December 2018, and at least one site projected him to go first overall in late January 2019.
“He seems almost certain to be the first top-ten pick from a mid-major school in five years” (Elfrid Payton, Louisiana-Lafayette), according to then-Yahoo Sports journalist Pat Forde. “And he could be the first true mid-major pick in the top five since Michael Olowokandi of Pacific went No. 1 in 1998.”
