Jaahnavi Kandula was born in 2000 in Andhra Pradesh, India (age 23 at the time of death). She was single-handedly brought up by her mother in Adoni, Andhra Pradesh. In 2021, she traveled to the United States from Bangalore for a student exchange program. She is pursuing a master’s degree in information systems at Northeastern University in South Lake Union, Seattle, and expects to graduate in December 2023.

On January 23, 2023, she was struck and killed by a patrol car driven by Officer Kevin Dave in Seattle. Dave was reportedly driving the car at a speed of 74 mph (119 km/h). Janavi was responding to an emergency call when his car struck him at the intersection of Dexter Avenue North and Thomas Street. After the car hit her, she was thrown more than 100 feet. Janavi was rushed to Harborview Medical Center, but died from his injuries. The night she died, her uncle Ashok Mandula flew to Seattle to make arrangements to take her body back to India.

- On September 12, 2023, the Seattle Police Department posted on the Internet a clip recorded by the body camera of Officer Daniel Auderer, a drug recognition expert who was tasked with checking whether Dave under the influence of any substance.
