Jack Kimble (R-Calif.)” in an article concerning the 14th Amendment, emphasising the congressman’s opposition to it, in another apparent unflinching instance.
Like Mr. Colbert of Comedy Central, who hardly ever strays from his role as a blustery conservative talk show host, “candidate” Kimble is all campaigning with little indication of the real person behind the act. With the exception of a potentially reliable post from Nate Peele’s sister, the blogger behind thatsrightnate.com, claiming that Nate Peele and Jack Kimble are the same person, online research yields very little useful information. Perhaps; perhaps not.
According to Anne Landman, managing editor of the Centre for Media and Democracy (CMD), a watchdog organisation dedicated to sniffing out spin in all its various forms in the national media, figuring out who the real identity of the funster is probably not as important as the fact that some pretty serious people were duped by the satire. On the CMD’s Weekly Spin newsletter, which was sent out on Friday, the ruse-ster was given a space.
She says, “The fact that a very respectable newspaper reporter was taken in by the joke is a good message to all of us that we need to stop and think about what we are consuming and ask questions about what’s behind it,” adding that particularly when it comes to political advertising, very little is disclosed.
She suggests that after asking who funds Jack Kimble’s comedy, one might move on to asking who is funding a political advertisement that disparages a particular candidate. Satire is an effective tool for teaching people to see their politicians with a bit more scepticism, she continues.
Elizabeth Ossoff, director of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at St. Anselm College in Manchester, claims that humour aids in framing the conversation. “Sarcasm helps show that the emperor is naked,” she claims. The capacity to grasp the big picture is crucial in a fast-paced news cycle, she continues, not just for journalists.
