Jaco Jacobs (born 22 February 1980) is a South African author of children’s books who writes in Afrikaans. He is the most prolific author of children’s books in Afrikaans, with more than 220 books published. His books have been translated into English, Italian and other languages.
Jacobs was born in the South African town of Carnarvon in the Northern Cape. He began writing at an early age and, while still in high school, sold his first short stories to publications. After graduating from the University of the Free State with a degree in Communication, he worked as a journalist and editor.
In 2001, Jacobs began writing children’s books. Following the popularity of his debut book, Pretpark, he went on to write a number of additional favorite children’s books, including Suurlemoen! (Lemon! ), A good day for climbing trees and Die Antwoord vir Liefde (Answer to love).
Jacobs’ works are known for their comedy, uplifting morals and captivating narratives. He has won various awards for his writing, including the M-Net Literary Award, the Elsabe Steenberg Award for Children’s Book Translation, and the SATI Award for Children’s Book Translation.
Jacobs not only writes children’s books, but also magazine editorials and essays. He translated more than 250 novels from English and Dutch into Afrikaans.
Jacobs, his wife and their two children live in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
