Jake Worthington knows it’s important to give iconic artists their flowers while they’re still around — which is why the 28-year-old Texan considers it a “gift” to collaborate with one of his “musical heroes” and fellow Texan, Miranda Lambert.

“Hello S—ty Day,” their recently released collaborative track, features Worthington and Lambert harmonizing laments about the good and bad things we all face in our daily lives, hailing both triumphs and tribulations in the process.

As for the song’s overall meaning, Worthington tells PEOPLE of its aptly-chosen title, “I know I’ve had them. I definitely have [those] mornings…mornings and evenings that felt exactly like what I believe the song portrays, and I think a lot of people.”

“People are going to have s—ty days. And I think we’re seeing a connection between listeners and artists based on what their songs are, how much you can relate,” he emphasizes.

Worthington recalls Lambert hilariously telling him, “It was a beautiful day out there,” at a songwriting session where they were working on the song’s lyrics with Dean Dillon, Jessie Jo Dillon and Jesse Frasure. “And Miranda told me that old Dean was just sitting there smoking a cigarette and went out on the patio and kind of came back and just said, ‘Hi, s—good afternoon.’ And Miranda said: ‘That’s what we’re writing today, by God.'”

After the inventive session, Lambert contacted Worthington directly to get him to belt out some of his signature vocals. “She sent it to me in a text message and, of course, I loved it from the start,” he recalls, “and I just asked her if it was something I could cut, and she said, ‘Yeah, hell yeah.'”

However, it wasn’t until Worthington “got the idea to ask her to sing with me” that the current iteration of “Hello S—ty Day” was born. Lambert’s answer? “Hell yes,” he recalled.

Fast forward to the two of them putting the song together in the studio. For Worthington, seeing Lambert work in person “makes you want to jump up and scream. It’s just so good.”

“I think for me it was really amazing and leveling to witness her ability to come in and just effortlessly lay down the law,” he adds. “She just walked in, sang that son of a gun, man… it couldn’t have been better.”

Reflecting on such a great collaboration with country music, Worthington says, “I don’t know why these gifts happen, but I certainly feel like that song that came to me was a gift. I can’t think of many different or similar occasions. I’ve ever had to, for the stars to align… to have the opportunity to sing a song that I not only believe in, but also with a musical hero like Miranda.”

Further highlighting Lambert’s triumphs in the genre, he notes that “it would be extremely difficult and ignorant to ignore the body of work she has given the world.”

“I feel like there are two kinds of writers in this world and two kinds of singers. I really believe there are lead writers and heart writers, lead singers and heart singers. To me, she leads with heart and soul. And I think that’s important in music ,” opined Worthington, adding “I don’t think there are any boxes on [her] passion.”

As for her take on the song, Lambert shared in a statement to PEOPLE, “Jake was the first person I thought of to sing it.”

“We’re both Texans who grew up on the same traditional country music, and I love watching his star rise. I was really proud when I heard he wanted to cut this song for his project, and I was thrilled to sing on it with him,” she continued. is.
