James Lawrence Dolan was born in New York on May 11, 1955 to Larry and Charles Dolan. His two brothers, Thomas and Patrick, are members of Cablevision’s Board of Directors. He is the nephew of Larry Dolan, owner of the Cleveland Indians.
He first wanted to be a musician, but later switched to communications. He attended SUNY New Paltz and struggled with drug addiction in early adulthood. He was at the Hazelden Clinic in Minnesota for addiction rehabilitation in 1993.

James Dolan began his career at Cablevision. His father sent him to Cleveland, where he worked at various jobs. He was named chairman and CEO of Cablevision in 1995. He was there to counter his father’s satellite service Voom. It was eventually closed.
His business career also included setbacks, including a $250 million loss when the Clearview Cinemas chain infamously collapsed. His company bought a 50% stake in Madison Square Garden after it was sold to ITT Corporation and Cablevision in 1994.
