News about James Gordon Wolcott

James Gordon Wolcott, then 15 years old, killed his parents, sister and other family members in 1967. By 1974, he was in a mental hospital. Before becoming a college professor, he faded into oblivion. Gordon B. Wolcott, a Southwestern University professor, his wife Elizabeth, and his 17-year-old daughter Elizabeth, were found shot to death at his home in Georgetown, Texas, on August 5, 1967.

An A.22 caliber rifle was used to shoot each of them. With two gunshot wounds to the chest, Gordon was found in the living room. Two gunshot wounds were discovered in the left side of Elizabeth Sr.’s skull in her bed. Elizabeth Jr. was found in her bed, shot through the heart and shot above her right eye. Gordon and Elizabeth were pronounced dead at the scene, but Elizabeth’s father died shortly after being admitted to hospital.

The murders horrified the small community of 5,000 people. The Wolcott family, who were well known in the community, lived on College Street near Southwestern University in a large white frame house. Elizabeth was expected to graduate from Georgetown High School in her senior year.

Although the murders themselves were gruesome, the small community was baffled by the identity of the killer. James Gordon Wolcott, the Wolcotts’ 15-year-old son, was arrested for the couple’s murders as his remains were being transported to the morgue.

At around 4:30 a.m., Wolcott stopped a passing vehicle after the murders. He said his parents were shot as passengers in the car. She pointed them in the direction of the residence where “they started finding bodies everywhere.”

Wolcott excelled academically at Georgetown High School and was a model citizen. He was a fighter for peace, had a high IQ, and was involved in the Methodist youth ministry. Almost immediately after his arrest, he confessed to the murders.

He quietly expressed his frustration with his mother’s nasty chewing and his sister’s “bad accent.” She complained that her father disapproved of her anti-Vietnam pins and prevented her from going to Austin to participate in anti-war rallies. Court documents say Wolcott believed his family was “conspiring against him to get him out of his head.”
