After several years in England, James returned to Edinburgh in 1988, where he worked for The Scotsman.
The following year he published MacFarlane’s first novel Boils by the Sea in 1990, helping MacFarlane establish the garage publishing house Belfry Press which moved to Hey Kyiv in 1991 and to Moscow in 1994.
He joined the staff of The Guardian, became Moscow bureau chief and moved to London in 1999.
