James Neesham started his career in 2011 playing for the Auckland domestic cricket team. His performance in more than 50 games has impressed everyone. He played three games and scored over 40 points each time. He was also a bowler and had one of his best figures against the Wellington Firebirds: 5 for 44 and 4 for 23 against Canterbury.
His performance earned him selection in the New Zealand Twenty20 squad against South Africa. He performed well enough to be selected in the ‘Cricinfo Champions League T20 XI’. In this tournament, he was named the best player of the match in one of the games and was also named the best player of the tournament by the “Cricinfo Champions League” official website.

Nisham made his Test debut on 14 February 2014 against India. He scored 137 points in the game. He also became the eighth highest-scoring rookie. His goal helped New Zealand win the match against India.

Neesham was selected by Delhi Daredevils for the Top 7 of the 2014 Indian Premier League (IPL). The following year, in IPL 8, he was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) but failed to play a single match due to injury. This resulted in him being dropped from the KKR squad next year.

In 2016 and 2017, he represented Derby County and Kent County Cricket Club in the “NatWest T20 Blast” series respectively. Neesham signed a one-year contract with the Wellington Firebirds in June 2018. Interestingly, his professional debut in Auckland came in 2011 against the Wellington Firebirds. Neesham also became New Zealand’s highest scorer in a single match, scoring 34 points in a match, with five sixes. He achieved this feat on January 3, 2019, against Sri Lanka.

In 2019, Neesham was selected into the New Zealand World Cup squad. New Zealand’s opening match of the 2019 World Cup happened to be Neesham’s 50th ODI of his career. Nisham scored five wickets for the first time in an international match during New Zealand’s 2019 World Cup match against Afghanistan. This allowed Neesham to take his 50th ODI wicket.

On April 17, 2019, James Neesham took to Twitter to post about the knockout match in the IPL in which MS Dhoni was involved. In one match, Dhoni was declared not out by the third umpire. Neesham posted a photo and tweeted –
I love the passion some fans have for our sport. I have the utmost respect for MS but how anyone could see the photo below and say it hasn’t come out yet really shocks me”
In the tweet, he claimed that Dhoni was out, but it looked like he was not out, just because of the wrong angle of the shot. After his tweet, Indian fans came under heavy criticism for his tweet and explained why Dhoni was not out. A few days later, he deleted his previous tweet about Dhoni and also posted another tweet explaining why he deleted his tweet and why he did not want to participate further in the discussion –
