Profession
Pattinson played for Dandenong Cricket Club in the Victorian Premier League and later he played for the Australian Under-19 team. He was also a member of the Australian cricket team for the 2008 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. In the same year, at the age of 18, he made his debut in first-class cricket. In December 2009, Pattinson played for the Victorian Cricket Team and set a record for the best bowling in Australian A-grade cricket; he bowled 10 balls and took 6 wickets for 48 runs. Due to his outstanding performance in domestic cricket, he caught the attention of the Australian selectors. As a result, he was selected for the Australian men’s national cricket team in 2011 and played his first ODI match for Australia against Bangladesh in Dhaka on April 13, 2011. On October 13, he played his first T20 match for Australia against South Africa in Dhaka. On December 1 of the same year, he made his Test debut for Australia in Brisbane against New Zealand. He took five wickets in his debut match.
Pattinson’s career started off on a steady upward trajectory. Given his impressive debut for Australia, the cricketing world began to see him as Australia’s next fast bowler after Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee. Unfortunately, recurring injuries kept him out of action for much of his career.
His career has been full of ups and downs. Since his debut in 2011, he has played only 21 Test matches (81 wickets), 15 ODIs (16 wickets) and 4 T20s (3 wickets) for Australia till 2020.
He has played for several domestic teams including Victoria Cricket Club, Melbourne Renegades, Nottinghamshire and Brisbane Heat.
In 2020, Mumbai Indians signed him as a replacement for Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga, who withdrew from the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL) due to family reasons.
