Foxx and Jones’ film follows the real-life story of Jeremiah Joseph O’Keefe’s lawsuit against the Loewen Group, a Canadian funeral company, as documented by The The New Yorker in Jonathan Harr’s 1999 article of the same name.
Before the SAG-AFTRA strike began in July, the two actors spoke with PEOPLE about what it was like working together on the film.

Burial was directed by director Maggie Betts, who collaborated with screenwriter Doug Wright on the script of the film. Betts recently told PEOPLE that “it was clear to her from the beginning” that Jamie would absolutely devour the role of Willie Gary.
Burial will have its world premiere on September 11 at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film will then be released in select theaters on October 6th before opening globally on Prime Video on October 13th.
