To celebrate the spooky holiday, the multi-hyphenated 38-year-old transformed into a real-life version of ET, the beloved character from Steven Spielberg’s 1982 film. ET extraterrestrial“You’re finally home. 🛸👆🏽Welcome back ET 🥹Thank you Google Maps. 🛸 Starring yours truly as both ET & Janellllliot,” the performer, who uses the pronouns she/her and they/them, wrote as she shared photos of the extravagant costume on Instagram , Wednesday, October 30.

She also channeled ET for the Halloween edition Jennifer Hudson Showwhich is shown on Thursday, October 31. The talk show shared a preview of the episode on Instagram and X, showing Monáe in full costume as she greets host Jennifer Hudson.

“I never would have guessed I’d get to meet ET,” Hudson said in the clip as Monáe repeated Hudson’s name and her prosthetic finger lit up.
An overjoyed Hudson then told the crowd, “ET knows my name. Thank you for coming to a happy place. I don’t know if I should say Janelle or ET,” to which Monáe replied, “ET is Janelle Monáe.”

Steven Spielberg reveals that ‘ET’ began as a story about his parents’ divorce
Earlier this month, Monáe revealed to PEOPLE that the elaborate costume was years in the making.
“I shared the costume idea with somebody’s team, actually, and tried to get a price on what it would cost. And then I found out that person was going to be it, and I’ve been planning this costume for two years,” she recalled to PEOPLE, noting at the time only that to be dressed as an “iconic movie character.”

Although she added that she will have “more costumes”, she revealed why dressing up in ET was special to her.
“It’s such a happy thing for me when I say to myself, ‘Oh, I’m going to be able to transform into this.’ I remember how I felt watching this character and I can’t wait to pay tribute to him,” she said.
