Janmeet Singh’s father, Jaswant Singh Khalra, was a prominent Sikh human rights activist who investigated and highlighted unlawful killings and cremations by the Punjab police during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. In 1995, he was kidnapped and killed for disclosing illegal killings and cremations by the Punjab police at an international forum.
His mother, Paramjit Kaur, is a human rights defender and politician. Until 1999, she worked as a librarian at Guru Nanak Dev University Library, Amritsar. After Khalra’s death, she became a human rights defender and worked with the Khalra Mission Organization to seek justice for 25,000 unclaimed bodies and convict her husband’s killers. .
His sister Navkiran Kaur Khalra is also a human rights advocate associated with the Khalra Mission Organization, which focuses on the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Punjab. In 2018, Navkiran Kaur married Dalbir Singh. Together they have a son.

- Janmeet comes from a family known for its legacy of activism and passion for fighting social injustice. Jamit’s ancestor Suraj Singh fought alongside the Sikh warrior Banda Singh Bahadur, the commander of the Khalsa army. His great-great-grandfather, Harnam Singh, was a passenger on board the Komagata Maru (also known as Guru Nanak Jahaz) along with Baba Gurdit Singh, who was responsible for the British and Canadian Challenges were posed to exclusion laws that prevented Punjabis from immigrating to Canada.
Of the 376 passengers on board, only 24 were allowed to enter Canada. The rest were forced to return to India.
