Jasbir Jassi is an outstanding singer, lyricist and actor who works primarily in the Punjabi film and music industry. He is known for his Punjabi folk melodies and lyrics with pop overtones. He has composed several iconic Punjabi songs for the Indian music industry such as “Koka” and “Dil Le Gayee Kudi”. Jasbir has lent his voice to many famous Bollywood films including Dobara (2004), Patiala House (2011) and Kesari (2019).

Jasbir Singh Bains was born on Saturday, February 7, 1970, in Dalia Mirjanpur village, Gurdaspur, Punjab (age 54; as of 2024).
According to Jasbir, he studied engineering for a year because his father wanted him to become an engineer; however, Jasbir gave up his engineering studies midway to follow his interest in music. Later, he began studying for a Master of Arts in Classical Vocal Literature at Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, Punjab, India; Jasbir dropped out of school again and began studying music under the guidance of a master. According to him, he learned music from VS Jolly and Sufi singer Puran Shah Koti.

The real “Dil Le Gayee Kudi Gujarat Di”
According to some sources, Jasbir Jassi met a girl from the Indian state of Gujarat in 1989 at the National Integration Camp for Youth in India’s border regions. Jassi belongs to Dhalia, a border village in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, while the girl belongs to a village in the border region of India. to Bhuj in Kutch district of Gujarat and slowly but surely a strong bond was formed. As time passed, the two fell in love. However, they did not end up together and the girl married someone else. Jassy reportedly tracked down the girl in 1998. In the same year, while traveling to Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh with Punjabi singer Sham Bhateja, Jahi spoke sentimentally about the girl to Bhateja and said “Dil Le Gayee Kudi Gujarat Di”. Hearing this line, Bhateja came up with the idea of composing a song after this line, which eventually brought Jassi fame.
