Jason Mraz Regrets Breaking 'So Many Hearts' Over the Years: 'Slow Down, Take It Easy' (Exclusive)

Jason Mraz’s heartbreaking days are behind him.

The “I’m Yours” singer, 47, tells PEOPLE that he would advise his younger self to put a little pressure on relationships.

“I’d say, ‘Relax kid, slow down. You don’t have to have so many relationships,'” says Mraz, reflecting on his rise to stardom more than two decades ago and his position on Teenagers2004 Sexiest Guys Ever List

She explains, “I feel like I’ve dated a lot over the years, I’ve always been looking for something, but really what I didn’t know was that I was looking for something inside myself.”

Mraz says he hoped another person or relationship could make him complete.

“As I got older, I realized, ‘No, I can feel everything I need to on my own and within my sexiness,'” admits the two-time Grammy winner.

Over the years, Mraz was married to Sheridan Edley, from whom he divorced in 2001, and Christina Carano, from whom he divorced after eight years in 2023. He was also engaged to singer-songwriter Tristan Prettyman for six months from 2010 to 2011.

The biggest lesson Mraz has learned from love — and there are “so many different kinds,” he adds — is that “the most lasting love will be the love you have with yourself.”

“If you do that and you can accept yourself on a daily basis, then you can actually go out into the world and help and love others and be in very loving relationships of all kinds,” Dancing with the stars alum says.

One step on the singer-songwriter’s path to self-acceptance was when he opened up Billboard in 2018 about his sexuality. He then revealed that he had “experiences” with men, even while dating Carano.

While I was on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast Dinner is on meMraz admitted that he feels like his life is “just beginning” after coming out at an older age. As he enters a new phase of his life, Mraz says he has “a whole group of friends, some I didn’t know 10 years ago.”

Now he has many mentors in various fields and of all ages, but he has also found joy in spending time alone.

“I dated so much when I was young,” says the “I Won’t Give Up” singer. “I was always only with someone. And I realized in my current life that I really like getting to know myself, and that will make me a better partner, when in the end… should I choose that.”
