Jatin Das is an Indian painter, sculptor, graphic artist and muralist. He is also a famous poet and writer. He is a contemporary artist who uses oil, acrylic, watercolor, ink and conté (hard pastels made from clay) in his paintings. Etchings, dry prints, lithographs and silkscreens are all printmaking forms of his paintings. Jatin Das has organized over 68 solo exhibitions nationally and internationally. “Wrapped Woman”, “Shakti”, “Interaction”, “Sringar”, “Krishna”, “Radha Krishna Ganpati”, “Radhika”, “Presence”, “Woman Pose” and “Classical Torso” are the works of Jatin Da Some of his famous paintings.

early life
Jatin Das was born in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha and grew up in a middle-class Bengali family. His family culture inclined him towards Indian art and cultural forms. As a child, he used to worship gods by singing religious songs, which eventually led him to become a music lover as he grew up. While in Mumbai, he often went to watch Bad Ghulam Ali Khan’s live concerts.

Soon after completing her studies, Jatin Das began participating in various art exhibitions in India and abroad. Initially, he participated in the Paris Biennale (1971), Venice Biennale (1978) and Kessel Documenta (1975).

Handmade fan series
Jatin Das has spent over sixty years building an extensive personal collection of traditional hand fans. This collection of hand fans, mainly from the Indian subcontinent, is regularly exhibited in various museums and studios in India and globally, such as the Victoria Memorial Museum in Kolkata, the Fan Museum in London, the National Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, the Reitberg Museum in Zurich and the National Museum in Manila. This collection of fans handmade by Jatin Das is now kept in a museum in New Delhi.

Jatin Das worked for the Indian Postal Service and drafted stamps on road safety, world peace and the International Red Cross. He is the founder of the Poetry Society, New Delhi, and co-editor of Blunt: Poetry Magazine, Mumbai, which he co-founded in 1964 with R. Parthasarthy and Indrasen M. Jayakar. In 1997, Jatin Das established a registered trust called JD Center for the Arts (JDCA) to promote various forms of art and Indian culture by housing his collection in the trust. Renowned architect BV Doshi designed the structure of the trust.

Jatin Das is not only a painter and cultural artist but also an acclaimed author. Jatin Das published a book in 2003 called The Art of Jatin Das. In 1972, Jatin Das published a collection of poems titled “The Poems of Jatin Das” by the Writers’ Studio Press, Kolkata. In 2015, Jatin Das received D.Litt. (Honours) degree from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Kailaghgarh. In 2012, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Indian government. In 2010, Jatin Das received the D. Litt Award. (Honours) degree from Ravenshaw University, Odisha. In 2007, Jatin Das was awarded the Star of Italian Solidarity by the President of Italy in New Delhi. In the same year, he received the Bharat Nieman Award and the Bhubaneswar Seminar Governing Body Award. In 2007, he was awarded the D.Litt Award. Honors degree from Utkal Cultural University, Bhubaneswar. In 2006, he was awarded the Utkara Award by the Governor of Bengal, Kolkata.

In 2018, Elrhino Paper co-founder Nisha Bora accused Jatin Das of sexual harassment. She said in her statement to the police that Jatin Das kissed her forcefully and sexually assaulted her when she went to meet him at his studio. Another woman named Garusha Katoch has also accused Jatin Das of sexual misconduct in the #MeToo movement in India. Thereafter, Indian Express reporter Anushree Majumdar accused Jatin Das of sexual misconduct. Later, Jatin Das publicly stated that he did not know the women at all and that the accusations against him were vulgar.
Facts/Trivia
- Jatin Das is famous for his philanthropic activities in India. He came into limelight for his charity work in 1999 when the super cyclone hit Odisha. Soon, Jatin Das initiated a charity relief and recovery project effort in many villages in the affected areas. Apart from the Orissa cyclone tragedy, Jatin Das has conducted 12 artist camps and 4 art workshops during his career, raising funds for 14 charity shows in India.
- Jatin Das created a 7 x 68 ft mural titled ‘Holiness of Mohenjo Daro’ during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure as Prime Minister Gandhi” and unveiled this mural in the Indian Parliament.
- Jatin Das’s paintings mainly focus on the relationship between men and women. The painting depicts the crises, encounters, revelations and emotional tensions between them.
- In 2015, the Indian government issued notices to Jatin Das and 24 other artists in Delhi, asking them to vacate the accommodation provided to them by the government for three years; however, they had been living in that accommodation for decades Year.
