Jax Taylor Has 'Mixed Emotions' amid Divorce from Brittany Cartwright but It's 'the Right Decision' (Exclusive Source)

Jax Taylor has complicated feelings after the breakup of his marriage to Brittany Cartwright.

On Tuesday, Aug. 27, Cartwright, 35, filed for divorce from Taylor, 45, citing “irreconcilable differences” in documents obtained by PEOPLE. In addition, she requested primary custody of their three-year-old son, Cruz, but asked that her ex be granted visitation rights. The news of the divorce filing comes six months after Cartwright announced that she and Taylor were separating for some time.

“Jax has mixed emotions,” a source told PEOPLE of the reality star’s feelings after filing. “He knows it’s the right decision in the end, but he’s sad that things ended up the way they did.”

The insider adds: “It’s been an emotional month for him and he’s trying to stay strong for his son.”

For Cartwright, the divorce was “a long time coming,” according to the source. They also noted that the filing was “something Brittany knew she had to do in the best interest of herself and her son.”

“There’s a lot that’s happened over the past few months that she couldn’t have overlooked,” the source continued. “This decision was not made lightly, but she is confident it was the right one.”

The source also shared that Cartwright and Taylor’s main focus is to do what’s best for Cruz.

“Their top priority is to get to a place where they can be friendly co-parents to their son and hopefully the next step will bring them closer to that goal,” the source said.

“I know I alluded to in my last podcast that a lot of marriages go through hard times,” she said at the time. “Yes, marriages in general are very difficult, and I had a particularly difficult year last year. Jax and I took some time and I made the decision to move into another home to take some space for my mental health.”

The first news of the couple’s split came just days before the first season of their Bravo series Valley premiered in March. The second season of the series is currently in production. Earlier this month, a source told PEOPLE that Cartwright and Taylor would continue to work together on the reality series.

Confirmation that Taylor will continue filming comes after another source told PEOPLE that he completed a 30-day stint in a mental health facility. “Brittany was supportive of Jax’s decision to seek help for their son’s well-being,” a source said at the time. “Looking forward, though, she’s not interested in anything to do with him.”

In addition to requesting primary custody of their son in her filing, Cartwright also asked the judge to end spousal support for both parties.
