Hailing from the western suburbs of Adelaide and a graduate of Henley High School’s sports programme, Barnett came into the spotlight before she could complete her education.

At the age of 16, Barnett moved to Canberra, Australia to enroll with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), receiving his first professional contract with the Brisbane Roar the following year.

He previously served in the NTC programs under current head coach Carl Veart and assistant coach and director of youth soccer Airton Andrioli at the state level.

Barnett left the Brisbane Roar in 2019 after three seasons and little first-team action with them. He made 43 appearances for Melbourne Victory before returning just over two weeks ago. The versatile defender, just 22 years old, has adapted to life on the road and out of the pocket, which underpinned Adelaide’s decision to sign him.

“Being there from such a young age shaped me as a football player and as a person,” Barnett said. “I was lucky to experience many great coaches and players during my time at Victory.”

“In the few years I’ve been in Melbourne, I’ve seen some of its darkest moments and taken a lot of blows.”

After impressing in his 82 minutes for United’s NPL Seniors in their 6-2 win over South Adelaide last weekend, Barnett has been named in Veat’s 20-man squad for Sunday’s game against his old team at Victory.

Often playing as a deep midfielder, Barnett is ready and eager to step up when necessary and his first-team debut for his hometown club would mean a lot to him. It really didn’t take me long to get used to the style, he said, “because it’s very similar to when I was here six years ago on the state show.”

“Airton and Carl have been very supportive of my youth development and last weekend Airton advised me to use that game to re-acquaint myself with the system. “Luckily he and Carl agreed that he was, so I look forward to every game until the end.

It’s already been a whirlwind, but wearing the red shirt of the club I grew up with would be a dream come true. Andrioli agreed, saying after the match that Barnett can be a “very valuable asset” to the A-League side and is ready to deliver on the promise that Adelaide initially saw in him as a junior.

Barnett’s second arrival also involves health concerns, as the young midfielder battled a severe case of pericarditis (inflammation of the muscle surrounding the heart) after contracting Covid last January. This failure was called “the most important obstacle” in the life of the young man.
