The report, published by investigative journalist Rohini Singh, made serious corruption allegations against Jay Shah, while providing supporting data showing that his company’s revenue had increased exponentially and there were financial irregularities. The investigative article reported that in the fiscal year 2014-15, one of Jay Shah’s companies (Temple Enterprise, which closed down in 2016) had a profit of Rs 18,728 and a revenue of only Rs 50,000, while in the fiscal year 2015-16, the turnover soared to Rs 805 million, an increase of 16,000 times. The various revelations in the article triggered a political storm, with opposition parties demanding that the Supreme Court oversee an investigation into the matter. In response to the report, Jay Shah filed a Rs 100 crore criminal defamation suit in an Ahmedabad court against seven defendants, including the author of the article and the editor of the online news portal. The case was filed under Sections 500 (defamation), 109 (abetment), 39 (intentionally causing grievous hurt) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. The case is still pending before the trial court.
