Jay Slater’s mum taking cash from £36k GoFundMe to pay for pals & family to fly to Tenerife as she defends search team

JAYA Slater’s mum has revealed she is withdrawing some of the £36,000 worth of donations raised amid the search for her son.

Debbie Duncan said the money from the GoFundMe page will be used to send “loved ones” to the “wonderful people” who are with her in Tenerife.

Devastated Debbie, 55, said the money would also go towards the Day 11 teams searching for Jay, as well as housing and food for her family.

She wrote on the page today: “We are currently working with GoFundMe to withdraw some of the funds, which are safe.

“I wanted to share with you that these funds will be used to support mountain rescue teams who are tirelessly searching for Jay.

“In addition, since our stay in Tenerife has to be extended, we will also use the funds for accommodation and food expenses.

“I am surrounded by wonderful people who are by my side but far away from their loved ones, so we will also use part of these funds to fly them to Tenerife to support each other in these dark times.”

It comes days after Debbie was forced to defend the fundraiser after internet trolls questioned what the donations would be used for.

The page, set up by Jay’s friend Lucy Law, surpassed its £30,000 target within days.

Debbie hit out at cruel conspiracy theorists asking why the money was needed – saying she felt “very disappointed”.

The mom said, “I’m really saddened by all your comments. It seems like this GoFundMe page bothers you so much.

“I really hope I’m not carrying my son home in a body bag.

“I really can’t believe that the British public is not supporting me in trying to find Jay.

“This could happen to any of you one day. You are all very disappointed.”

Jay, from Lancashire, has been missing since last Monday and Debbie said her family is in a “living nightmare” as search teams fail to find any trace of him.

After going to a rave that ended in the early hours of June 17, Jay headed to Masca with two Brits he met that night.

He shared the last Snapchat from their Airbnb with his hand holding a cigarette at 7.30am.

It comes as…

Jay then attempted to return to his holiday accommodation – an 11 hour walk away.

But at around 8.50am he made one last frantic call to friend Lucy, telling her he was lost in the “middle of nowhere” with no water and only one per cent of battery left on his phone.

This prompted a massive search operation involving helicopters, drones and sniffer dogs, which has so far been fruitless.

Rescue crews focused their efforts on Masco’s 2,000-foot-deep ravine to the north, where his phone last pinged a nearby cell tower.

Earlier this week, Tenerife police brought in reinforcements from Madrid – including specialist sniffer dogs adept at searching large areas.

Despite the apparent lack of progress in finding Jay, his mom praised investigators and urged the public to pray for her son.

She told Sky News: “I have full faith in them on the ground and in the amazing quests they’re doing with the even more amazing guys up there.

“As a family we are in a living nightmare. We have no further updates other than Jay is still missing and we are just ignoring the social media side of things.”

Debbie was referring to the twisted conspiracy theorists and trolls who flood social media with disgusting posts.

The mindless searchers also took it upon themselves to try to investigate Jay’s disappearance.

Sitting behind their computers 2,000 miles away in the UK, internet trolls peddle crazy conspiracy theories and baseless claims.

Many use Google Maps to scour the desolate Rural de Teno park for clues before taking their crazy thoughts to social media.

Thousands of keyboard raiders have joined wretched Facebook groups, including one called Jay Slater Discussions and Theories.

Within the publicly visible groups are dozens of cruel, nonsensical posts blaring completely baseless claims and vile comments.

Most are posted anonymously or by trolls using fake names.

Distorted memes about Jay’s disappearance were also shared within the groups.

Far-fetched theories suggest that Jay could have been kidnapped after crossing “Moroccan drug gangs” or that the mafia is behind his disappearance.

Jay’s friend Megan Blair called out the trolls and warned them to stop spreading the ridiculous claims.

She said: “Can everyone stop believing everything they see on TikTok, the stories are not true and just things people make up.

“Honestly I think it’s disgusting, there are people who go live with the sign “looking for Jay”.

“If you’re helping find Jay, do so without using him as a way to gain followers.

“He’s not just a pawn on your way to fame. This is someone’s son and friend and there are people who are genuinely concerned.”
