Lalita Rani Ravanam or Jaya Prada was born on 3 April 1962 in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, India (age as of 2023: 61 years). Her father Krishna Rao is a Telugu film financier. She attended a Telugu medium school in her hometown of Rajahmundry and took dance and music classes. When Jaya was just 13 years old, she danced at her school’s annual event. A film director in the audience invited her to play a three-minute dance role in the Telugu film Bhoomi Kosam, which she accepted. She was paid Rs 10 cr for her role in the film.

film career

She started her career as an actress. She made her Telugu debut in the film Bhoomi Kosam (1974). She made her debut in the Kannada film industry in Sanaadi Appanna (1977).

Sargam (1979) was her first Hindi film. She made her Tamil debut with Ninaithale Inikkum (1979). Iniyum Katha Thudarum (1985) was her first Malayalam film. Apart from this, Jaya Prada has also acted in Marathi and Bengali films. Jaya Prada is one of the best dancers of her time. She was nominated three times for Best Actress at the Filmfare Awards; Sargam (1979), Sharaabi (1984) and Sanjog (1985).

Political career

In 1994, she joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) at the invitation of its founder NT Rama Rao and became a politician in 1994. In 1996, she was nominated as a Member of Parliament representing Andhra Pradesh. Jaya Prada also holds the post of President of Telugu Mahila. She left the TDP and joined the Samajwadi Party due to differences with the party Supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu. In the 2004 general elections, she contested from Rampur, defeating Begum Noor Bano Alias ​​Mehtab Zamani Begum of the Indian National Congress by a margin of 85,000 votes. In the 2009 general election, she was re-elected to the Lok Sabha from the same constituency. Jaya was expelled from the party on February 2, 2010, when she started supporting former Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh.

On March 10, 2014, she joined the Rashtriya Lok Dal along with Amar Singh. Jaya contested the 2014 Bijnor district election but lost. She contested against Azam Khan from Rampur in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but lost.

Subsequently, the Uttar Pradesh MP-MLA court issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Jaya Prada. In November 2023, the court extended the arrest warrant for the fourth time because she failed to appear in court.
  • On August 11, 2023, the Egmore Magistrate Court in Chennai sentenced her to six months’ imprisonment and fined her Rs 10 lakh. Fined $5,000 for non-payment of ESI to employees of a cinema she owned in Chennai. According to sources, after the closure of cinemas, the Labor government insurance company filed a complaint against her, accusing her of deducting ESI amounts from workers’ wages but not paying them. Jayaprada admitted the charges and said he intended to settle the outstanding payments while also seeking to have the case dismissed. However, the court rejected her appeal and imposed a fine and jail term.
