News by Jaylin Williams
At the end of this season, coveted Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Jalen Williams will likely make the NBA All-Rookie First Team, and with good reason.
There is another J. Williams on the list to discuss. The 6-foot-10 Jaylin, also a freshman, flew under the radar for most of the season despite displaying offensive play that could make him a standout candidate down the road.
His 5.6 points per game in 17.6 minutes per game might make you laugh at first. That’s a relatively modest production rate, even per minute. Let’s ignore the volume for now and focus on the scoring structure he established himself.
Williams uses a variety of double grip layups, toe spins, spins and putts from around 8 to 10 feet with incredible inside touch.
The raw skill set is there, and as the pace of the NBA game becomes second nature to him, the more likely he is to be able to recognize when the ideal time for effective shots is. He’s shooting 61.8% from three feet, so let’s not pretend his finish doesn’t need work.
Williams seemed to have more patience. He will wait for his opponents to retreat before moving in and making himself available. He thus made 40% of his attempts this season and made 28 three-pointers in 34 games. He makes a ludicrous 69.2% of his shots from long range (over 16 feet and to the 3-point line), but rarely.
Since the playback and summary are identical each time, the recording seems pretty consistent. Although all of his action seems a bit haphazard, he is very skilled at quick shooting. In order to use his long-range shot to create drive to the basket, he occasionally tricks defenders into making good fake shots.
Williams plays direct basketball where he hits great outside shots, doesn’t rush into long looks and is mindful of giving his teammates the space they need. If, for example, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander or the other Williams mentioned above make a basket from a certain angle, he will move to the corresponding parts of the court.
