Jena Antonucci became the first female trainer to win the Belmont Stakes in its 155-year history on Saturday when Arcangelo took the lead at the top of the homestretch.
Antonucci collapsed to the ground, resting his head, arm and body on the back of a saddle as the horse crossed the finish line. When the horse returned to the area in front of victory circle, she kissed him on the nose.
Arcangelo completed the mile and a half in 2:29.23, ahead of favorite Fotre by a length and a half, while Tapit Trice was third.
“I give all the credit to the horse,” said jockey Javier Castello, who rode Mage to victory in the Kentucky Derby and got the horse when that colt didn’t compete in the Belmont. “This horse is fantastic. She’s a really good woman, so I’m very excited for her. She’s a skilled rider.”
A Triple Crown streak marred by horse deaths at Churchill Downs in the weeks leading up to the Kentucky Derby and a second on Preakness day for trainer Bob Baffert was bolstered with a stirring win. It also marked the end of a week in which the Belmont Stakes was threatened by air quality problems caused by the Canadian wildfires.
