Jennifer Mary “Jenna” Elfman was born in Los Angeles, California to Sue (Grace) Butala and Richard Butala on September 30, 1971. Her father is the CEO of Hughes Aircraft and her mother is a homemaker. Her uncle, Tony Butala, is the lead singer of American vocal trio The Lettermen, and she has two siblings.

She began studying ballet at the Westside Ballet School at the age of 5, but had to stop due to an injury. Elfman spent a year at St. Genevieve in the San Fernando Valley before transferring to Los Angeles County High School of the Arts. She later graduated from California State University, Northridge.
