Jennifer Garner Admits She’s ‘Not Really Relaxed’ When It Comes to This One Thing

Jennifer Garner can relate to the pressure of wanting to make sure you’re doing the best for your kids at all times — especially when it comes to feeding them something you can feel good about.

“Moms understand how hard it is,” says Garner, who is co-founder and brand ambassador for the organic food line Once Upon a Farm. “We just want to make their lives easier and give them food they can trust and not worry about.”

While at a launch party for her company’s new chilled oat bars, Garner, 51, tells PEOPLE that she finds it difficult to feed her children garbage, especially knowing all the metals and microplastics that are often found in the soil where our food is grown.

“I’m not really relaxed about it,” says mom to Violet, 17, Seraphina, 14, and Samuel, 11. “That’s why it was so important for Once Upon a Farm to make a bar, because parents can trust that nutrition will be increased and that there will be tastes good. They can feel good knowing they’re giving them something nutritious, sugar-free, preservative-free, non-GMO and clean and all those things that are so super hard to do.”

(The new oat bars come in strawberry, banana chocolate and apple cinnamon flavors.)

Still, Garner says she’s not the perfect food mom.

“There are no absolutes,” she says when it comes to parenting. “Putting that kind of pressure on yourself, having this idea that everything has to be perfect? No. It’s just an unrealistic idea of what we’re all trying to achieve.”

So, if you’re wondering if her kids can sometimes tear open a bag of salty chips, the answer is: Of course.

“Do I get in trouble when I don’t have food on hand and the kids want trash? Sure, they’ll get trash here and there, especially on yesteryear,” she says. “You just want more good than bad. So if you have something readily available that’s easy and great for your child, why not use it?”

She says that this is what originally attracted her to work with Bilo odmen farm.

“I never imagined I’d be doing anything like manufacturing, but when I started working with brands in different capacities, I started to feel like, wow, I wonder if I could be a part of something that’s good from the ground up and get to know them and maybe even influence them to work with Save the Children,” she says, adding that Once Upon a Farm did just that.

“And the products just make our lives easier. They have great ingredients and hopefully your kids will reach for them first, and then if they get up and go, at least you know they have something real in their bodies,” she adds. “And it tastes good!”
