You can tell who are first-time Sundance Film Festival goers, says Jennifer Lawrence. “Because they don’t wear real snow boots.”
And in 2010 during the award-winning debut Winter bonethe film that launched her into superstardom, “that was me,” she tells PEOPLE exclusively.
“I was in, like, Louboutin boots that were sliding all over the place,” the actress recalls of her first time at the snowy festival in Park City, Utah — now celebrating its 40th anniversary after Robert Redford and the Sundance Institute created the event.
“Trying to walk in high heels on frozen streets,” says Lawrence, “it stood out.”

What Silver Linings Playbook The Oscar winner mainly remembers that “beautiful and so cold” experience, which was of course her first real exposure to the lights of the Hollywood spotlight. “I remember it was the first time someone wanted to interview me and they were really interested because they thought I was a good actor.”
Winter bone, directed and co-written by Debra Granik, stars the then 19-year-old Lawrence as a teenage survivor in rural Ozark, Missouri in search of her father. It won the Grand Jury Prize and the Screenplay Award at the festival in 2010. She and supporting actor John Hawkes were then nominated for Oscars at the 2011 ceremony — the first of Lawrence’s four overall honors — where the film was also nominated for Best Picture. .

Navigating the snow at Sundance is “fun, it just makes it harder to get there,” she adds. “It’s also the first time I learned the term ‘cat corner!’”
When asked what he likes about the annual event, Hunger Games the star says, “I love the movies that come out of there and I love the kind of audiences they attract.”
And he can’t resist shouting about one of his favorite television phenomena taking place in close proximity to the festival: “Of course I want to praise the ladies The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.”

Among Lawrence’s upcoming projects is to play Hollywood agent Sue Mengers in a biopic Sue. Her performance last year No anger she received a nomination for the 2024 Golden Globe, her sixth.
The 2024 Sundance Film Festival takes place from January 18 to 28. It celebrates 40 years of bringing indie cinema to the mainstream, including titles such as Little Miss Sunshine, The Blair Witch Project, Get Out and this year’s Oscar nominee for Best Picture Past lives.
