Jennifer Lopez Gets Emotional as She Reveals She Was ‘Manhandled’ While Recalling ‘Unsavory’ Past Relationships

Jennifer Lopez looks back on her romantic history and how she grew up.

In his new Amazon Prime Video documentary The greatest love story never told — which accompanies the filming of her original music film, This is me… now: a love storyboth airing now — Lopez talks about past experiences she had to move on from.

The topic comes to light as the actress and singer, 54, discusses scenes from the recording of her song “Rebound,” which appears on her new album This is me… now. In the scene, Lopez and the lover from the film perform a choreographed dance number, suggesting domestic violence in a toxic relationship.

“I’m glad one is behind us,” Lopez is seen saying later, as she walks from the set to her trailer.

She later becomes emotional during the car ride when asked about filming that story.

“It’s not fun to be thrown around and tortured like that,” Lopez says. “I’ve never been in a relationship where I got beat up, thank God, but I’ve definitely been abused and a few other nasty things… rude… disrespectful.”

In the next scene, Lopez is at home talking to her longtime friend and production partner, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, to whom she tells about the emotional toll the project has taken on her.

“More than anything, it’s a really vulnerable place to be in every day. That’s why I go to work every day and ask myself, ‘What am I doing?'” Lopez says.

Goldsmith-Thomas responds, telling Lopez, “It’s a personal journey … that will relate to so many women who have been abused … You’re talking about how we accept less than we deserve.”

Lopez does not name who “manhandled” her. But she says throughout the documentary that the film is an amalgam of her experiences in love and dating and illustrates her journey towards self-love.

“There were people in my life who said, ‘I loved you,’ and then didn’t do things that were consistent with the word love,” Lopez says earlier in the documentary. “You have to hit rock bottom, when you’re in situations that are so uncomfortable and so painful that you end up saying, ‘I don’t want this anymore.’ The therapist said to me, ‘What if this was your daughter? What would you do?’ And it was so clear. I thought, I would tell her, ‘Get the hell out of here, never look back.’ But for me it was so clouded and so complicated with so much of my past and my own pain and hurt and dysfunction, that I couldn’t see clearly. It was like looking through a fog.”

Today, Lopez is happier than ever with her husband Ben Affleck, who appears in both the original musical film and the documentary and inspired much of This is me… nowalbum.

The A-list couple first started dating in 2002 and got engaged that same year before calling off their wedding in 2003 and splitting in January 2004. Lopez and Affleck finally found their way back together in April 2021 and tied the knot in July 2022.

“I think I was angry with you for a long time,” she tells him in the documentary. “But that heartbreak set us both on a journey to figure out how to be better people. I think I forgave you everything. I think I should forgive myself [for] some things.”
