Jennifer Lopez has nice things to say about America Ferrera and the way she continues to represent the Hispanic community in Hollywood.
The singer of the song “Let’s Get Loud” (54) introduced Ferrera (39) at a special screening of the film Barbie respecting Superstore the actress’ role in the film Saturday night at NeueHouse in Hollywood.
“Barbie is all about empowerment. It’s about the magic of the stories we tell ourselves, our inner imaginary little girl fantasies at play that turn into our real big girl dreams, and the realization that we can be anything we want…no matter if we a girl from the Bronx via Puerto Rico, from Los Angeles via Honduras or from Mattel via the magical pink box,” Lopez said at the event.

“In my mind, there’s no one who embodies that more on screen and off than my friend America Ferrera. She’s honestly such an inspiration. She’s been such a constant in this business for Latinos for years and years and years,” she continued.
Lopez went on to say that she admires the younger actor’s activism and talent, but described her personality as “even more beautiful” than the work she does.

“What she does for the Hispanic community is showing up when we need her, motivating us to use our voices and stand up for a better world. And I’m happy to say thank you. Thank you. for all you do. It’s important, Lopez continued. “We appreciate you too. America, your role in this film is truly authentic.
The love between the women was palpable as they hugged each other after Lopez spoke.
Then Ferrera introduced himself Barbie, but not before telling the audience that she was crying. “You would have cried too if JLo had just said those things about you,” she said, adding that “there was no plan” to make it as a Latina actress in Hollywood before Lopez paved the way.
“We’re not just a footnote, we bring incredible value to why things resonate, why things are successful,” Ferrera said of the Latinx community.

She then explained that she was playing the role of Gloria in Greta Gerwig Barbie it was important to her because she had to prove to the world that Latin stories don’t always have to be traumatic.
“When I agreed to work on this film, it was personal and it was a journey that I wanted to go on. But it was a journey that I wanted for us. I wanted us to be in this and to be represented,” Ferrera concluded.
At the question and answer session after the film. Ferrera said that there was “purposefulness” in the role of Gloria, but “not symbolism”.
“I wasn’t there to be Latina. I had to be a whole person,” she said.
