She is grateful for her ability to speak because as a victim of a serious sexual assault, it is a miracle that she can speak. On Friday at the Stanly County Agricultural and Building Center, she spoke to guests at Butterfly House’s Abuse Prevention and Awareness Breakfast about how she overcame abuse.
The Butterfly House offers counseling and therapeutic help to children who have suffered neglect, sexual or physical abuse. According to director Amy Yow, the organization helped 280 children in Stanly last year, a 30% increase over any previous year.

Before a group of about 200 people, Schuett described how, when she was 8 years old, on August 10, 1990, a stranger abducted her from her apartment in Dickinson, Texas. He covered her mouth and nose as she tried to scream.

Schuett claimed that he took her to a brushy area and sexually assaulted her there. She collapsed. She was lying naked on top of an anthill when she regained consciousness, her throat slit from ear to ear. She said: “I prayed because I knew that she was going to die.
Some children found her playing hide and seek after being in the field for almost 12 hours and rushed her to the hospital. Despite being unable to speak, Schuett was able to describe her attacker in writing and composite sketches of the two were created.
Doctors then told her that she would never be able to speak again. His voice returned during a two-week hospital stay despite his diagnosis. She resisted her attacker’s attempts to intimidate her into silence.
Over the years, Schuett’s case remained unsolved despite the best efforts of numerous investigators. During that time, she did not lose hope. Schuett did not stop recounting her kidnapping and attempted murder of her using her restored voice. She created her own website and shared her story with anyone who would listen.
Investigators in the case, Dickinson Police Detective Tim Cromie and Houston FBI Special Agent Richard Rennison, recalled a letter Schuett left immediately after the attack that read: “His name was Dennis.” After Bradford was arrested, Rennison and Cromie managed to convince him to confess to the kidnapping, rape, and attempted murder of Schuett. A few months before the trial was to begin, in May 2010, Schuett received what he described as “the worst phone call of his life.”

“I put a lot of effort into remembering every detail. She wanted the chance to testify against him in court and read my victim impact statement, she said. “I wanted to see this through to the end.” Exactly 20 years after she was abducted, a few months later, on August 10, 2010, she visited Bradford Cemetery and read her victim impact statement.
“You know, I can’t help but wonder if he’s listening to everything I have to say,” she murmured as she read it. Suddenly, a fire ant bit her leg, which she took as a sign from God that Bradford had indeed heard her.
Schuett’s story came to a satisfying conclusion. Doctors gave her a grim prognosis that she couldn’t get pregnant, but she still managed to beat the odds and she gave birth to Jenna and Jonah. We have all come together for a reason, and that reason is the children, so seeing all of you here today is overwhelming.
