Jenny Slate's 'Punchy' Hèrmes Birkin Bag in It Ends with Us Had Its Own Security Guard on Set (Exclusive)

Jenny Slate makes an impression as soon as she walks into Lily Bloom’s restaurant It ends with us.

As Allysa, the 42-year-old actress is boisterous, witty, colorful and the perfect best friend.

And she has a killer wardrobe.

In her first scene in the film, where she walks into a flower shop before Lily — played by Blake Lively — before she can even clean the place, the very rich (and apparently bored) Allysa is a shopaholic.

Not only is she wearing the most beautiful coat we’ve ever seen, but she’s also carrying a Hèrmes Birkin bag, oh so casual. That’s how you know she has money – and she does. She is married to a millionaire.

Costume designer Eric Daman breaks down the details of Allys’ first look for PEOPLE and the anatomy of Allys’ wardrobe as a whole, saying he didn’t want her to look like a caricature because she is so rich.

“I wanted her to feel like she was going to be a best friend who was kind of a fairy god sister in a way, and [her first look] it has a magical whimsical ethereality that felt otherworldly, but he also wanted to make sure we didn’t fall into the wacky best friend,” he says.

So he reached for two statement pieces: a coat and a bag. The jacquard coat, by Oscar de la Renta, was one he saw in the ODLR showroom while working on the finale Gossip Girl. At that time there was no place for him in the show, but, he says, it kept “singing” to him.

When this project came up, he told his team to call the house to see if it was available, and it was.

“It kind of made my dreams come true to be able to work with that piece because it was so unique and beautifully made and it didn’t feel like wacky fashion,” he says. “It’s beautiful. Also, there’s an art to it. It’s an Oscar, so it’s beautifully crafted and the lines are amazing.”

The other piece of the puzzle was the bag, and Daman knew it had to be a Birkin, but he didn’t want just any Birkin, he wanted one that was “punchy”.

“I feel like women with real money and taste wear bold colors,” she says with a laugh. “That’s their neutrality—not camel or black.”

But working on a shoestring budget meant borrowing strategically, and finding what he was looking for wasn’t easy. Luckily, Daman was able to find exactly the orange Birkini he needed from Fashionphile — but it came with a caveat.

“We were really excited to find the bag and it had its own security guard that came with it, which I haven’t actually seen since I pulled Van Cleef back in the good old days Gossip Girl. But okay, he needs a keeper and that’s great,” he says.

Building Allys wardrobe, Daman says he just shamed her into going “freaky,” because he never wanted Allysa to stray into that territory, and he actually sprinkled a little Blair Waldorf on her costumes, which you’ll see right from the start, right down to her headbands. the head.

“I felt like Allysa would have watched growing up Gossip Girl and I’d be Blair,” Daman admits. “Just a nod to the Easter eggs for all the fans and just to be light and self-referential about it, which as a designer, you don’t often get a chance to do without going full tilt. But just having, like, headbands, so there’s an element to that. When you see that, you think, ‘Oh, she’d be a fan of the show. And that would be transferred to her dressing as well.”
