Anthony Joshua knew he had to make a statement before the fight as many expected the kind of ‘AJ’ knockout that has made him a household name in boxing. It was obvious that the Texan wanted Joshua to use his lethal right hand by pounding Franklin with a punch in the first round as new trainer Derrick James watched. Franklin tried to counter this by developing his jab, but every time the American tried to attack, Joshua capitalized on some of his body shots.

Joshua’s right hand became more frequent as the fight continued into the middle rounds, and when it landed, Franklin was still on his feet, similar to his encounter with Dillian Whyte late last year.

Franklin deserves credit as most viewers predicted he would not go in six rounds against the former unified world champion. Franklin appeared to be in for an early night in round six when Joshua missed him with a right hook.

In heavyweight boxing, stamina is crucial, and after cutting a lot of weight for this fight, Franklin started to wear down after the eighth round, making for a rather tricky end to the fight. Franklin tried to keep the fight close with frequent clinches. The 29-year-old rocked Franklin with another right uppercut in the tenth as the tactic seemed to be working.

The sold-out O2 Arena crowd was excited for the final two rounds. They had witnessed this legendary finish to Joshua many times, and perhaps his encouragement would give him the extra push he needed to finish off the night.

However, the early finish never materialized, with the fight being decided based on the judges’ scorecards, two of which handed the British fighter wins by scores of 117-111 and 118-111, respectively. Tyson Fury, the current WBC heavyweight champion, was named as Joshua’s potential opponent after the fight, which was to be expected. Fans are clamoring for Fury to be Joshua’s next opponent.

But it’s clear that the friendship between Joshua and his new trainer Derrick James still has a long way to go, and perhaps the push for a world title shot in the summer has gone too far.

Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight division will be happy to see the 33-year-old return to winning ways and perhaps bring some order to boxing’s most glamorous division after a turbulent few weeks as the sun sets on this new dawn of his career.
