The holidays are a family event for Jessica Capshaw!
The actress — whose mother, Kate Capshaw, married Steven Spielberg in 1991 — spoke exclusively with PEOPLE while attending the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in New York on Friday, December 13. During the conversation, Jessica, 48, shared that Christmas happens “in different ways” in her “very large family.”
“So we’re often drawn into it [big family celebration]and good luck,” says the mom of four, adding, “So we have a big family, but we have a big family within a big family.”
When asked if her stepfather Spielberg, 77, would ever appear as Santa this time of year, Grey’s Anatomy the actress revealed that “Christmas jams” are more his style.

“I saw some Santa Clauses. I have photo documentation. There are definitely Santa jams. Santa suit? I didn’t see it,” she says, before joking that she did Jurassic Park the director might “be inspired” to wear it after reading this interview.

Capshaw – who shares children Luke, 17, Eve, 14, Poppy, 12, and Josephine, 8, with husband Christopher Gavigan – also noted that while the holiday season is underway, that doesn’t necessarily mean “time off” you’re a parent .
“It was funny. We realized when we went on our first vacation [with kids] — we said, ‘Oh, vacations really aren’t vacations. These are family trips.’ It’s trips with your family. Annual leave and vacation have become something completely different.”

However, Praxis star also says she “couldn’t be more excited” about the upcoming time with her family.
“I’ve been working a lot lately,” she says, adding, “So I’ve decided in my mind tonight — which is Friday night — to be here with some of my girls and have a really good time and then enjoy the weekend. Then Monday is the Monday before Christmas.”

Speaking about raising teenagers, Capshaw shared that her daughters are finally old enough to watch her Grey’s Anatomy.
“I remember thinking my kids would never watch it because they were so tiny, and now they have friends who watch it, and they watch it, and it’s become a multi-generational thing where it’s wild,” she tells PEOPLE.

The actress also admits that she “panicked a little” when her daughters started watching because she realized “it’s an adult show.”
“The thing is, they roll with it,” she said, adding, “But I’m always, like, ‘My door is open for questions.’ ”
