Jessica Capshaw's 4 Children: All About Luke, Eve, Poppy and Josephine

Jessica Capshaw is a busy mother of four: Luke, Eve, Poppy and Josephine.

The Grey’s Anatomy star married entrepreneur Christopher Gavigan in 2004, and over the next decade, the actress and co-founder of The Honest Company grew her family.

Now, Kate Capshaw’s daughter and Steven Spielberg’s stepdaughter works hard to balance work and family life. Amidst her busy filming schedule and her children’s various activities, Jessica believes that over-communication can ease their worries.

“Sometimes I work very, very hard, and a lot. I always keep my children very well informed,” Tell me lies the star told PEOPLE in 2017. “The one thing that kids, I think, really have the hardest time with is not knowing. So as long as they know and know what to expect, they’re very well equipped. Because they’re very resilient.”

Luke Hudson Gavigan, 17

Jessica and Christopher welcomed their first child, a son named Luke Hudson Gavigan, on September 8, 2007.

By the time he was 5 years old, Luke had already been to several events with his mom. However, she began to keep him out of the public eye, and the next time Jessica saw him was on his eighth birthday in 2015.

She shared a throwback picture of Luke to commemorate the day the “cutest angel” was born.

“You brighten our days with your sunshine and light our paths at night with your moonlight,” she continued on Instagram. “Everything is more fun with you by my side.”

Growing up, he also believed Jessica was a real doctor, as she said at PopFest 2017. Entertainment Weekly.

“When my son started kindergarten … during the first or second week, I got a phone call that he wasn’t feeling well,” Jessica said. “I rushed to the school, I walked in the door, and the nurse … says, ‘Oh, I see.’ And I said, ‘Sorry, what?’ ”

“And my son looks up, sits on that thing and [the nurse] he says, ‘Your son said his mom is a doctor,’ she added.

Although he didn’t understand her acting job at the time, Jessica embraced it all with excitement.

“When my son hugs me out of nowhere and I ask him why, he says, ‘Because you’re my love ball,'” she said. Good housekeeping 2011. “I love the element of surprise in being a mom.”

Eve Augusta Gavigan, 13

Jessica and Christopher celebrated the arrival of their second child, daughter Eva Augusta Gavigan, on October 20, 2010.

Like her brother, Eve started gracing the red carpet events as a baby, and over time she began to achieve milestones behind the scenes. In honor of her fifth birthday in 2015, Jessica wrote a sweet tribute on Instagram.

“Today she is 5 years old, yet she walks with a million years of wisdom on her shoulders,” the actress wrote alongside a photo of Eva. “The best combination of joyful, kind, caring, generous and boy oh boy is this little SMART.”

Two years later, Jessica reported how her education was going.

“Eve is starting kindergarten this year,” Jessica told PEOPLE. “And it’s just that sponge of bringing home every single fact that then comes into her little life as a kindergartner—she’s teaching me things again.”

During her childhood, she also explored various passions, including horseback riding and traveling. In 2018, Jessica took Eve to Paris, a Rest the star documented the special moment on social networks.

“We couldn’t have had a better time exploring such a magical city and meeting such amazing and kind people,” she wrote on Instagram alongside a selfie of them hugging. “City lights and history and architecture and food and art, and, and, and … the list is endless. I feel so grateful for this time and opportunity. 💕.”

Of all their children, Eve was seen less often than her siblings. In addition to the occasional family photo of the six-member group, Christopher also peeked into her enjoyment of life, as in the summer of 2019.

“Be strong, be generous, be all – we need you now,” he captioned a picture of Eve sitting in the sand as waves crash around her.

Most recently, Eve made a rare appearance alongside her grandfather Spielberg on the 2024 Oscars red carpet.

Poppy James Gavigan, 12

Jessica and Christopher have expanded their family again with a daughter, Poppy James Gavigan, born on June 20, 2012.

When she was almost 5 years old, Praxis alum revealed her budding personality to PEOPLE. “Poppy is my little dancing queen. She’s starting to become quite the storyteller in our family,” she said.

In 2019, Jessica took Poppy on a trip to Amsterdam and Paris.

“Dear Paris. Poppy and I really love you. Thanks for a day full of fun, curiosity, wonder, wandering, love and adventure,” she captioned the Instagram post alongside pictures of her and Poppy.

Like her older sister, Poppy is also a rider. The following year, Christopher posted a photo of her celebrating a win at a horse show.

“Witnessing your child commit, connect and collaborate with grace, deep strength and their deepest truth… ✨🐎🥰 I’ve learned so much from you, Poppy,” he wrote on Instagram.

Jessica showed her Instagram followers more than just Poppy’s energetic personality when she celebrated her ninth birthday. The actress shared a video of the mother-daughter duo posing in overalls on a picnic table just in time for summer.

“The sun always shines brighter when you’re around… there’s no one with more sparkle in their eyes or joy in their smile,” she wrote in 2021. “Poppy, I’m grateful every day that I can be your mom. ”

Josephine Kate Gavigan, 8

Jessica and Christopher were excited to welcome their fourth child, a daughter named Josephine Kate Gavigan, on May 2, 2016.

The Strange man The star announced the birth of her youngest daughter on Instagram, writing, “I’m beyond grateful for her safe arrival and my heart is so full of love it’s about to burst.”

Speaking to PEOPLE later that year, Jessica revealed that her older siblings were immediately obsessed with her. “Everyone just loves each other and it’s so wonderful to be a part of that,” she said.

In 2017, the actress also shared candid anecdotes about Josephine’s growth, including her love of homemade organic purees and how quickly she started moving on her own. Jessica noted that once her youngest child started sitting up and crawling, he became “a very active member of the Capshaw-Gavigan household.”

During a virtual performance at Living with Kelly and Ryan In 2020, Jessica revealed that Kelly Ripa supports her decision to have another child.

“Kelly was very vocally in favor [having a fourth baby]”, the actress told co-host Ryan Seacrest, explaining that she is on the fence about whether it would be difficult for her to have another child.

Jessica continued, “She was like, ‘Take fourth, take fourth.’ … I’m very grateful because I’m so happy.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jessica realized how lucky she is to see her children so often. “The other day, my younger daughter, Josie, was upset that I had to go. I told her, ‘I love that you’re going to miss me. I see you all the time,'” she told C Magazine in 2020

Jessica added: “When my other daughters were her age, I was at work a lot, sometimes at 4:30 in the morning. While there is nothing ‘good’ about the pandemic, what it has meant is that my family is together a lot more often . ”

In May 2024, Josephine and her mother traveled to Paris, where they saw the sights and attended a Taylor Swift concert. The mother-daughter duo even went backstage after the concert to take photos with the pop star, who has been friends with Jessica for years.
