Mat Ishbia’s Latest News
After an incident with Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia, Denver Nuggets All-Star center Nikola Jokic assessed a technical foul in the second quarter of Game 4 on Sunday. Suns guard Josh Okogie slammed into the stands late in the second quarter while attempting to rescue a loose ball. He landed amid a crowd of fans on the baseline, among whom was Ishbia, who grabbed the basketball.
When Jokic attempted to steal the ball away from Ishbia, he was apparently trying to retrieve it quickly so the Nuggets could begin their offensive possession. The ball bounced back into the crowd, and Ishbia was shoved back by Jokic’s elbow.
Jokic was unapologetic following the Suns’ 129-124 victory. “The fan was the one who put his hand on me first,” Jokic explained. “I thought the league’s job was to protect us.” Maybe I’m mistaken. I recognize him, but he is a fan. Is he not?
“(Jokic) is going to get the ball, and some fan is holding on to the ball like he wants to be a part of the game,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. Just give up the ball, guy.”
After a few minutes of confusion, as referees tried to figure out what was going on, Jokic was called for a technical foul. The Suns converted the subsequent free throw.
During Game 4, Jokic receives a technical foul and attempts to steal the ball from Suns owner Ishbia
The fourth game of the Nuggets-Suns series on Sunday included a wild second-quarter sequence involving a two-time MVP, a club owner, and a retired Hall of Fame point guard.
Suns guard Josh Okogie fell into the stands while pursuing a lost ball out of bounds with 2:36 left in the second quarter. The ball landed in the hands of a courtside fan. Meanwhile, Joki believed it was his responsibility to collect it. He did so with force, pulling the ball from the fan who had it in his hands.
What about that fan? He’s Suns owner Mat Ishbia, who bought the team from exiled prior owner Robert Sarver in the middle of the season. After jarring the ball loose, Joki shoved Ishbia in the chest, sending the Suns owner sliding back into his seat. In the video below, Ishbia is wearing a green jacket:
