The singer and fashion mogul (43) walked the red carpet in News about footwear‘ 37th Annual Achievement Awards at Cipriani South Street in New York City on Wednesday night.

Simpson wore a shimmering silver sheer floor-length dress. She posed with her mother Tina Simpson on the red carpet.

In a statement shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Simpson said she was “honored” to receive the award from her industry peers.

“I’m honored that my spirit has connected with people in need in ways that are obvious and in ways that are more subliminal,” Simpson said. “The fact that News about footwear bestowing that title on this Texas girl helps illuminate the path ahead.”

In a feature for the publication, Simpson reflected on what it means to her to be an icon. “An icon is someone who is not afraid to take risks,” said the former reality star. “And often their choices don’t make sense right away, but they are part of an enlightened understanding of the big picture. It is someone who transcends a particular time or place and defines the moment.”

One bold choice Simpson made was to take back control of her fashion empire. In 2021, she bought her company from partner Sequential Brands Group and set about making the brand bigger and stronger than ever.

Outside of her brand, Simpson has had fun with fashion in other ways. She recently joined influencer and podcaster Bunnie XO in a TikTok video. The Dukes of Hazzard star wore a skin-tight leopard-print dress — accessorized with plenty of jewelry — as she sang her own 2003 hit “With You.”

Earlier this month, Simpson enjoyed a fancy bachelorette party with friends. In a photo shared on Instagram, she showed off her look for the evening – a vampy red miniskirt with black lace details, black platform boots and a feathery black clutch. “What’s yours will find you when you least expect it ✨”, she wrote in the description.

Last week, she gave a playful nod to the Black Friday shopping tradition – and included her brand – with a mirror selfie that captured her in a colorful trench coat. In the background of the photo, you could see shelves with heels and boots.

“Black Friday @jessicasimpsonstyle shoooooeeeesssss,” she wrote.
