Biography of Jim Boeheim

Career
Boeheim began his professional career with the Scranton Miners of the Eastern Professional Basketball League after graduating from Syracuse, where he won two championships and was a second team all-star (SU Athletics).
Boeheim decided to pursue a coaching career in 1969, accepting a position as a graduate assistant at Syracuse University under Roy Danforth. Shortly thereafter, he was promoted to full-time assistant coach and was a member of the coaching staff that led the Orangemen to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1975, where they reached the Final Four.
Danforth left in 1976 to become the head basketball coach and athletic director at Tulane University. He was then promoted to head coach. In 1986, Boeheim was offered the head coaching job at Ohio State, but decided to stay at Syracuse. In each of his 42 seasons as a head coach, Boeheim led Syracuse to the postseason. Syracuse has only been eliminated from the playoffs once, in 1993.
Boeheim was named Big East Coach of the Year four times and District II Coach of the Year ten times by the National Basketball Coaches Association. Boeheim received two additional awards in 2004. The first came in the spring when he was presented with the Clair Bee Award in recognition of his contribution to the sport of basketball. In the fall of the same year, Boeheim received Syracuse University’s Arents Award, the university’s highest honor for alumni.
He was then sacked for the first time in his career on November 7, 2005, during an exhibition game against Division II Saint Rose of Albany, New York, after challenging a call late in the first half of the Orange’s 86–73 win.

Additionally, he led Syracuse to its first Final Four appearance since 2003, when they won the NCAA National Championship. Michigan beat the Orange 61-56. He led the Orange to the 2013-14 NCAA Tournament, but was swept by the Dayton Flyers in the third round.
Boeheim led Syracuse to another unexpected Final Four appearance in 2015-16, despite missing the 2015 tournament due to a self-imposed postseason suspension. That includes a 15-point comeback against the top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers. North Carolina beat the team 83-66.
Syracuse began the next season ranked No. 19 in the AP poll, but missed the NCAA Tournament by one spot. Syracuse would return to the NCAA Tournament in the 2017–2018 season. despite finishing 8–10 in the league. On January 14, 2019, Syracuse defeated Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium, handing the Blue Devils their first home loss to an unranked team.
Syracuse got off to a poor start to the 2019-20 season, losing 48-34 to Virginia, the lowest point total of Boeheim’s career. In the ACC Tournament, SU defeated North Carolina 81-53 to win its final game of the season and upset the Tar Heels for the first time since 2014. This would be the last game due to the COVID-19/. Syracuse would upset third-ranked West Virginia in the Sweet 16 in 2020-21. before falling to eventual Final Four participant Houston.
