News about Jimmy Dunne
An awkward and intriguing year in professional golf just got more intriguing. The PGA Tour made an announcement months in the making Tuesday morning: Jimmy Dunne, the insider insider of the elite golf club scene with the charming candor of a classic New York cabbie, will join the PGA Tour board of directors as an independent director in 2019. The press release, however, had more value than most boilerplate.

That’s because the standard press release failed to mention that one of Dunne’s main responsibilities will be trying to prevent more big players from leaving the PGA Tour or the game’s amateur division to join LIV Golf. Without any official title, he’s been doing this for the better part of the past year in his unique way.
In both business and golf, Dunne, a silver-haired, 5-foot-8, 65-year-old Long Islander, doesn’t hesitate to speak up or speak his mind. However, his free consulting services will now be paid for and he will receive a one in 10 vote on major PGA Tour policy decisions.
Dunne responded, “It means you think and vote for yourself,” when asked what it means to be an independent director. The commissioner’s primary responsibility is to the players, but an impartial board member looks after the players, sponsors, fans, television contracts, and everything in between.

But Dunne and PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan share the same broad perspective on professional golf. They both have a caustic “Take my lunch money and I’ll come after you” attitude. They are very close to each other.
This won’t surprise you considering that. Rory McIlroy, a close friend of Dunne’s and a PGA Tour board member, has occasionally expressed interest in him partnering with LIV Golf, which is funded by Saudi Arabia. Dunne disagrees with that opinion.
Dunne claimed that his appointment to the board was a “wartime deal”. He omitted the famous line from “The Godfather,” which refers to “going to the mattresses” when the Corleone family fights other New York crime families.
The phrase, by the way, appeared for the first time in Mario Puza’s book. McIlroy and Dunn exchange notes about books. Dunne is reading The Gap and the Gain: The High Achievers’ Guide to Happiness, Confidence, and Success, McIlroy’s latest offering.
Dunne does not do word analysis for businesses. Even his commencement address last year at his alma mater, Notre Dame, was sometimes informal and unstructured. “I’m not the type,” she added, “if you like cold, clinical detachment in people.”
In his speech on Tuesday, he further demonstrated his penchant for talking about the real world. I wouldn’t want to work for LIV Golf commissioner Greg Norman, Dunne said. I prefer the ones who are completely trustworthy, trustworthy, and more interested in the truth than the flash.
Dunne, whose life was dramatically changed by the events of September 11, 2001, in which he lost a large number of friends and associates, said he also would not want his salary approved by a Saudi bank. He spent most of his Wall Street career working for himself in investment firms where he was a director.
