Joan Savage dead: Coronation Street star dies aged 89 as devastated family share emotional tributes

CORONATION street star Joan Savage has died aged 89.

The actress reportedly passed away peacefully at Brinsworth House in Twickenham, south-west London, earlier this month.

Joan played dancer Celeste Pickersgill during a short run in Coronation Street in 2000.

She took a liking to Norris Cole after they were paired during a competition held in the Tower Ballroom.

Joan also appeared in an episode of Dad’s Army in 1972 and featured on The Arthur Haynes Show for seven years during an illustrious TV career spanning six decades.

Born in January 1934, Joan followed her comedian father Norman around local clubs across the north of England.

She joined Blackpool Children’s Tower Ballet and Blackpool Tower Circus aged just 12.

Joan rode elephants, rollerbladed and performed songs in various acts, paving the way for an appearance on Mr Ronnie Taylor’s Variety Fanfare on BBC Radio.

She also went on tour as leading lady in George and Alfred Black’s entertainment show called Music and Madness, reports The Blackpool Gazette.

During the tour, she met fellow performer Ken Morris, whom she would later marry in Blackpool in 1955.

The couple later established a successful double act, appearing in numerous TV commercials and shows including The Jack Jackson Show and The Black and White Minstrel Show.

They had their first child together, daughter Kelly, in March 1960.

Husband Ken sadly passed away in July 1969 after being diagnosed with a brain tumor.

But Joan would go on to establish herself as one of the UK’s most popular entertainers, continuing to perform a range of songs and impersonations in summer shows and concerts, as well as on cruise ships.

She married Bryan in November 1972 and is survived by daughter Kelly and grandsons Mark and Simon.

In total, she appeared in more than 350 TV shows and was awarded the Freedom of the City of London Award in 2008.
