Joaquin Phoenix Rules Over France and Wages War as Napoleon Bonaparte in New Napoleon Trailer

Joaquin Phoenix is ​​going into battle in his next film.

On Wednesday, Apple Original Films and Sony Pictures Entertainment released a new trailer for Napoleonin which Phoenix, 48, plays French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.

The trailer for director Ridley Scott’s latest film picks up where the first trailer left off — with Bonaparte setting off a trap against enemy forces on an icy plain. The rest of the trailer, cut to the tune of Black Sabbath’s 1970 song “War Pigs,” depicts his rise to power in 1790s France and his relationship with his wife Josephine (Vanessa Kirby).

After the French Revolution, Napoleon seizes power of the nation and is crowned emperor, leading to a multi-year reign involving diplomatic and military conflicts with other major European powers, including Great Britain.

The film’s official synopsis praises Scott’s “large-scale cinematography” as the story “captures Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power through the lens of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine, showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever put on film. ”

Napoleon marks the first film for director Scott, 85, since releasing two films in 2021; The last duel and House of Gucci.

In real life, Bonaparte rose to power during the French Revolutionary Wars and became emperor in 1804. After several wars, he was exiled to Elba in 1814, escaped and reigned as emperor again until his defeat at Waterloo in 1815. He was then exiled again to St. Helena , where he died in 1821 at the age of 51.

Napoleon marks Phoenix’s second appearance on the big screen in 2023 after starring in the horror epic Beau is afraid. The actor has one Academy Award through his 2019 Best Actor win Joker; he will reprise the role in the 2024 sequel starring Lady Gaga.

Phoenix and Kirby, 35, previously said Empire magazine that they agreed to “surprise each other” on set with impromptu reactions and physical interactions during filming.
