Joni Mitchell and Annie Lennox Support Brandi Carlile at Hollywood Bowl Show

Joni Mitchell and Annie Lennox teamed up with Brandi Carlile for an unforgettable night of music.

The singer hosted a show called “Brandi Carlile and Friends” at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday, and true to the show’s name, she brought several of her famous friends on stage, including rare appearances from Lennox, 68, and Mitchell, 79.

During the show’s finale in Los Angeles, the trio of acclaimed folk singers teamed up to perform some of Mitchell’s biggest hits, including “Circle Game,” “Ladies of the Canyon” and “Shine.” To top off the evening, Carlile, 42, was asked by her friend and “hero,” Mitchell, when they could sing “Shine” together.

Carlile asked, “Can we sing my favorite song you’ve ever written? ‘Shine’?”—which she began by saying, “I promise I won’t get too used to asking you for favors.” Mitchell obeyed and replied, “Okey-doke,” to the evening’s host.

In addition to performing a duet with Mitchell, Carlile also covered the singer’s “Woodstock” and “I Belong to You.” Before performing “I Belong to You,” she told the audience that it was the first Mitchell song that “changed” both her writing and her as a person.

“I realized that I didn’t know how to be vulnerable and honest, that changed my songwriting. But it didn’t just change my songwriting, it changed me and prepared me for this better half of my life,” said Carlile, trans. The evening also featured a rare live appearance from Lennox, who joined Carlile for renditions of “Why,” “No More ‘I Love You’s’” and Eurythmics’ “Love Is a Stranger.” During the mini-set, the “Sweet Dreams” singer thanked Carlile for putting the show together, to which Carlile repeated her thanks, saying she wouldn’t be a performer without Lennox’s influence on the music industry, reported Diversity.

Joni Mitchell reveals she has a new live album based on her performance at the Newport Folk Festival

The October show follows Mitchell and Carlile’s 2022 performance at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island, where Carlile joined Mitchell on stage to perform “Joni Jams,” a full catalog of the 79-year-old’s greatest hits.

When the concert ended, Mitchell said to Carlile, “Thank you for doing this for me. You make me feel so cool!” and the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to Mitchell ahead of her 80th birthday next month.

Before the recent 2023 shows, the aforementioned Newport Folk Festival performance with Carlile was the “A Case of You” singer’s first public performance since 2013 and her first full set since headlining the 2002 benefit concert.

These recent performances also come after the singer suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015.

The “Both Sides, Now” singer told CBS News in 2022 that after the aneurysm, she had to relearn how to play the guitar, among other skills that needed to be relearned.

– I’m studying – she said. “I watch the videos on the net to see where I put my fingers, you know. It’s amazing what it takes to get an aneurysm out – how to get out of a chair! You don’t know how to get out of bed. You have to learn all that stuff again by heart. I did aqua ballet as a kid and forgot breaststroke by myself. Every time I tried it, I almost drowned, you know? So, a lot going back almost to childhood. You have to relearn everything.”
