Jodie Sweetin Says She Started Pursuing Standup Comedy 'Weirdly' Around the Time Bob Saget Died

Full house alum Jodie Sweetin opens up about how her iconic TV father — the late Bob Saget — influenced her career in standup comedy.

Comedian, 42, who played Stephanie Tanner Full house alongside Saget’s TV dad Danny Tanner, explained on the June 28 episode of the podcast Full House Rewind with Dave Coulier that her standup adventures coincidentally began when Saget died in January 2021.

“It’s completely organic and strangely it happened around the time Bob died,” How rude, Tanneritos! the co-host told Coulier, who also starred on the ABC sitcom from its 1987 debut until its 1995 finale.

“You and Bob really gave me permission to have uninhibited comedy, to just be funny and goofy and say it and use humor to get through some really dark stuff,” Sweetin continued.

Before Saget’s death, the father-daughter pair on screen, Coulier and others Full house stars reprized their roles for Netflix’s sequel series, a fuller housewhich lasted from 2016 to 2020.

Sweetin added in the latest Full House Rewind episode where Saget and Coulier “shaped” her humor, especially when she transitioned to standup.

“It allowed me to go through anything fun and crazy,” she said. “And so now I get to do it with other comedians, like, with other stand-up actors, and I’m so honored that they even take me seriously and I get to do that.

The mother-of-two said that although many people urged her to do standup – telling her: “You’re funny. She should do it” — she pointed out that she was “mostly” constantly pushed by Coulier and Saget.

“I can’t tell you how many times you and Bob complimented me on how funny I was,” Sweetin recalled fondly.

Earlier this year, Sweetin marked the second anniversary of Saget’s death.

“2 years. It still doesn’t feel real,” she captioned a Jan. 9 Instagram post. “I’m thinking of Bob (and his daughters and Kelly and the rest of my FH fam) today. Although it would be a lie to say that I don’t think about him most other days. I still expect to see your messages in the group chat. Or hearing, ‘Hey, by the way, it’s Bob’ like I don’t know.”

“The best TV dad that ever existed…we will always miss you,” Sweetin concluded, wearing a “Bob Saget” hoodie in the photo.
