Joe Biden Addresses Presidential Debate Performance: 'Don't Speak as Smoothly as I Used to'

President Joe Biden spoke out after his performance in the 2024 presidential debate against Donald Trump sparked concern.

Biden (81) and Trump (78), the two oldest US presidents in history, took separate podiums in Atlanta on Thursday, June 27. In the end, many political strategists were concerned about Biden’s lackluster performance and bothered by the lies Trump was telling from the stage.

During the debate, Biden appeared disoriented, his voice muffled and he struggled to follow Trump’s rapid-fire speech, adding to fears about his age. (A source later told PEOPLE he had a cold.)

Biden has since spoken about his performance, telling supporters at a rally in Raleigh, NC on Friday, June 28, “I don’t walk as easily as I used to. I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. No I don’t debate as I used to, but I know what I know, I know tell the truth!”

Despite his concerns, Barack Obama still believes in his former vice president’s ability to serve a second term as president.

He weighed in on Biden’s performance on Xu (formerly of Twitter), writing, “Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know. But this election is still a choice between someone who has spent his whole life fighting for ordinary people and someone who only cares about himself .”
