Joey King Shares the Secret Behind Her Playful Style: 'Brat Summer Brought Out Something in Me' (Exclusive)

Even if she wasn’t wearing Longchamp shades of green and orange, Joey King would stand out in a crowd.

25-year-old actress, known for her roles in Law and The kissing boothstopped by the legacy accessories brand’s Fall/Winter 2024 collection launch on Wednesday, September 4 — ahead of New York Fashion Week. Always one to rock the red carpet, King brought her A-game to the New York event, wearing high-waisted green satin pants, a bright orange bralette and a white sleeveless vest, carrying her black Le Roseau mini bag.

“It’s kind of different every time,” King tells PEOPLE of choosing her look with her stylist, Jared Eng. “Sometimes we get a call and it says, ‘You’re invited to this,’ and it’s the night before. And we’re like, ‘What the hell am I going to wear?’ ”

Regardless of function (or if there’s a time crunch), playfulness always comes first for the star.

“If I don’t have fun with clothes, then I won’t wear them well. I won’t be confident,” she explains. “There are looks that I’ve done in the past that I feel like, ‘Oh, those were mistakes,’ because you can tell that I’m not necessarily vibing or feeling into it.”

Her confident, risk-taking fashion choices are exactly why Longchamp wanted her to be the evening’s special guest.

“I think we’re lucky to be surrounded by energetic women who are very authentic,” Juliette Poupard, newly minted head of events for the brand and a fourth-generation member of the family business, tells PEOPLE. “When I look at her, you can see how authentic she is, but also how elegant, elegant. She is exactly what we love.”

At just 5-foot-4, King still stands tall—metaphorically speaking—in the bustling event space, which featured interactive elements like an aura room and on-site makeup artists.

“I almost wore orange [Le Roseau bag] tonight, but I thought it was a bit too much with my orange top,” she says of her vibrant look.

“Too much” doesn’t seem to be in King’s fashion vocabulary, after all. At the June premiere of her film A family affairthe actress wore a sheer black tulle top with 3D roses and a matching sheer skirt.

“Grandma asked me in the car, she said: ‘Are you nervous?’ ” she told PEOPLE on the red carpet. “I said, ‘No,’ and she said, ‘Well, your ass is hanging out.’

She wore a similarly risque ensemble at the Cannes Film Festival in May, wearing a sheer blue dress with a corset. “I feel like a brat [summer] it took something out of me,” King says of the Charli xcx album-inspired trend Brat. “Like, ‘I’m going to take out my boobs or dye my hair a fun color. I just want to be the funnest young version of myself.’
