News about John Della Volpe
During his first trip to Duke, John Della Volpe, head of research at Harvard’s Kennedy School Institute of Politics, did what he does best: He talked to young people.
Della Volpe, who most recently served as a pollster and strategic communications adviser for President Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign, discussed what he believes sets Gen Z apart politically in a speech Oct. 4. The pollster visited Duke as part of a college tour in which he was following the publication of his book, “Fight: How Gen Z Channels Their Fear and Passion to Save America,” in January 2022.
Della Volpe had lunch with the students to begin her visit. Thalia Halloran, a 22-year-old research associate with the Hart Leadership Program, was in attendance. The Sanford School Public Policy Program, a service-based organization, sponsored and promoted Della Volpe’s speech.
Given that Gen Z students already make up the majority of our student body, Halloran explained, “we thought this was very relevant to the interests of our students.”
In response to the question “Why Duke? Because right now? “I think we’re obviously on the cusp of a very important, number one election,” Della Volpe said. Second, I think many generalizations about Gen Z are incorrect.
According to Della Volpe, there has been a significant shift in voting behavior between millennials and Generation Z. She noted that when she interacted with Generation Z in 2017, they had different concerns and put more effort into voting than their older counterparts. Della Volpe stressed the importance of the youth vote in the 2018 and 2020 elections, noting the fact that bills related to climate change, gun violence, and student loan debt could not pass without the support of Young.
What he said made him very happy: “Politicians are really starting to realize that you actually have real power.”
Generation Z was described as “the most diverse generation of Americans we’ve ever seen” when the event began, but Della Volpe also noted how they were “robbed of that experience of seeing America truly united.”
Della Volpe highlighted the burdens that Generation Z is now carrying, including the drug epidemic, environmental issues, isolation due to the pandemic, and rising suicide rates. Despite this, he praised Gen Z for being resilient and motivated to create change.
