John Legend Stated That His Feud With Kanye West Was Over Politics

The root of his feud with Kanye West, according to American musician and songwriter John Legend, was their political differences.

Legend said on CNN’s The Ax Files podcast:

“We are not as close as we used to be. I truly believe that since we have openly disagreed over his candidacy for government and his support for Trump, it has become too much for our relationship to sustain.”

Then he said:

“I wasn’t alone in this, but, you know, he wasn’t happy. We haven’t been in touch since then.”

Kanye West has been an outspoken fan of former United States President Donald Trump. He recently stated that he “still wears the red hat”. West also ran a presidential campaign as a third-party candidate in 2020. His campaign, however, was controlled by a group of Republican operatives who wanted Trump re-elected.

Kanye slammed Legend and Big Sean for not supporting him during the presidential campaign in November. During an appearance on the Drink Champs podcast, the musician stated:

“When I was campaigning for office, Democrats were quick to use John Legend and Big Sean to attack the young man who changed their lives. That’s some rubbish nonsense. And I’m not messing with any of them, so please accept my apologies.”

Kanye West and John Legend Feud 2018

The political differences between Legend and Kanye are not new, dating back to 2018. In an interview with 202, John Legend said that he does not consider Kanye West a close friend and that their waning relationship is part of the normal cycle of life. Kanye West officially endorsed the former US president in 2018, after which Legend reportedly asked him to reconsider. According to reports, John Legend told West that he was too strong and important to support Trump.

While Kanye didn’t change his support for Trump, Legend expressed his disappointment but said he won’t give up on West. He also said that they “were not the best of friends.” Legend said in a 2020 interview that he and West continue to discuss the topic, saying:

“But as I’ve always said, we’ve never talked about politics before.” In our entire conversation it was never mentioned. Our conversations were almost always about music and art.”

Kanye West has had several public feuds recently. He recently had a public spat with American rapper Kid Cudi, who appeared to be friends with Pete Davidson. Kim Kardashian, Kanye West’s ex-wife, is dating Davidson. Kanye publicly said that Cudi will not appear on his next album ‘DONDA 2’ because he is “friends with you know who”. He also said that “we all speak Billie’s language today”, implying his public feud with Billie Eilish.
