He is an American citizen of mixed descent (Welsh, English, Scots-Irish, Northern Irish and Scottish). His parents’ names are Arthur Washington Lithgow III (father) and Sarah Jane (mother).

His father is a prominent producer and director who previously ran the McCarter Theater in Princeton, New Jersey. Similarly, his mother used to be an actress. He also has a brother named Robin Lithgow. John Lithgow attended Princeton High School in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1967, he graduated from Harvard College with a degree in history and literature.
