John Mayer’s hopes for his love life are more serious than sexy.
“People don’t think I want to get married. I absolutely I want to get married,” the musician, 46, told friend Kelly Rizzo on Sunday’s episode of her new podcast Comfort food.
“You know the secret, and it’s that I’m actually pretty well adjusted. And I want to get married so bad that my wife just knows in her heart, like, ‘John will know what to do.’ I just think that level of reliance on me is the hottest thing in the world. ‘If my husband was here, he would know what to do. Call John. Call my husband.’ You’re fully grown when this is your romantic fantasy. You’re fully grown.”
Rizzo, 44, joked back: “Your flaw is that you want someone to say ‘John has a guy.'”
“Reliance kink? Oh my god,” the guitarist agreed. “Fault in reliability? YES.”

Anderson Cooper has a good laugh as John Mayer calls in the New Year’s special from Tokyo Cat Bar
Mayer has previously spoken about his goals in his personal life, talking to Adele and talking to close friend Andy Cohen about what it would take to complete his bucket list.
“That would be — that would be the end of it,” he told Cohen Andy Cohen live in 2021. “And I was thinking about this last night. ‘Cause my brothers are married and have kids… My dad was 50 when he had me. I think if I work backwards, it’s 50. Forty-eight, 50 . ”
In 2017, Mayer said for The New York Times that he called calming down “the last frontier” and wishing for a “headphone baby,” referring to his child in the crowd at one of his shows wearing noise-canceling headphones.

He recently touched on the subject again on his new SiriusXM radio show Life with John Mayerjoking with the caller that he was looking for his own “referee”.
“Again, I need someone to tell me to stop these things at some point. I’ve heard people tell me I shouldn’t get married—I said, ‘I need Judge, I need someone to step in and just say, ‘You can’t do that,'” Mayer said.
“I’m going to share with you something that my therapist told me. I asked him, ‘Will I find someone in my life? Will I eventually find someone?’ And he said to me, ‘John, it’s inevitable.’ I loved that word — ‘inevitable’. Because that means I have nothing to do with whether I want to or not. And I believe that. And maybe someone can get something out of it, if they’re alone this holiday season… The stakes get really high when you get older.”

Rizzo — the widow of actor and comedian Bob Saget, who died suddenly at age 65 in January 2022 — launched her podcast in November and is currently working on a cookbook. Mayer and Saget have been friends for years, from dining together in Los Angeles to teaming up at charity events. Saget traveled to Brazil with the musician to celebrate Mayer’s 40th birthday in 2017, while Mayer sang at Saget’s wedding to Rizzo in 2018.
In Sunday’s episode, which aired just before the second anniversary of Saget’s death, Mayer and Rizzo recall processing the loss, grieving together and their experiences in the weeks that followed, including Mayer and comedian Jeff Ross picking up Saget’s abandoned car at airport.
“John did a lot for me that first week and the last two years which is really … and I know this is going to sound dramatic but it’s true and he’s very humble about it – but he really physically saved my life that week . I was really not feeling well, and he stepped in and did things for me that no one else could do that literally saved my life,” Rizzo recently told PEOPLE.
“I went back through the two years of text messages we had, especially during that first month. We relived some of the text messages we sent each other [on the podcast].”
