John Mulaney Says Olivia Munn Staged Mini-Intervention, Began Randomly Drug-Testing Him When She Was 6 Months Pregnant

John Mulaney is open about his journey to recovery from addiction — and the support he’s received along the way.

The Saturday night live alum, 42, who was revealed as GQThe 2024 Man of the Year spoke candidly with the publication on Tuesday, Nov. 12, about his whirlwind year as a new father of two, as well as his ongoing recovery from addiction.

“There was a time when I would have told you I couldn’t fly, sleep or perform if I didn’t have Klonopin,” Mulaney told the news outlet. “I’d say, ‘That sucks because I don’t always want to take Klonopin and Xanax, but I have to.’ ”

The comedian, who checked into rehab for cocaine and alcohol addiction in December 2020, recalled one “crazy” night at the height of his addiction when he took so many drugs he thought he was going to die.

“I thought, ‘Okay… I’m going to slow down completely. That was like Tuesday. And on Thursday night, I did it again,” he said.

Mulaney shared that his wife, Olivia Munn, decided to perform her own mini-intervention to get more involved in his recovery journey. When she was six months pregnant, Mulaney said she also decided to conduct random drug tests to ensure he remained on the path to successful recovery.

“It’s like a relief … I love that I can not even have that question on her or anyone else’s mind,” Mulaney said. “Something about peeing in that cup is like, I’m walking this way. It gives me confidence.”

“[She] had to date me after recovery, and that’s what they call a reverse capture,” he joked, adding: “I’m very lucky to have met this woman.”

Munn, who revealed her bilateral breast cancer diagnosis in March, told the GQ about meeting Mulaney at that time in his life, “I was watching somebody who was just sober, on the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know him well enough to help him.”
