John Stamos Says He Went Home and ‘Drank a Bottle of Wine’ After DUI in 2015 to ‘Forget What Happened’

John Stamos shares more “disappointing” details from his 2015 headline-making DUI.

The Full house The alum, 60, recently reflected on the worst moments of his alcohol addiction — recalling how often he drank and why the DUI pushed him to finally get clean.

“When I got the DUI … that night I got home from the hospital, I sat down, I drank a bottle of wine just to forget what had just happened,” he tells PEOPLE. “And I never sobered up.”

Despite the chaos, Stamos recalls having to go to Canada for filming right after the DUI My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. However, he admits that he continued to drink to escape the reality of the mess he found himself in.

“When you get sober, you have to look at the ugly truth, so you keep drinking,” he says. “So I kind of just kind of buzzed through the making of that movie.”

During a recent appearance on Mayim Bialik’s podcast Bialik BreakdownStamos said to Big Bang Theory Alum, 48, says he doesn’t remember filming at all because he was so “drunk,” admitting DUI and filming My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 was his lowest point.

“That was rock bottom,” he explained. “But I didn’t get it and I just went numb for a few weeks after that. And when I got home, my sisters said, ‘Okay, it’s time to go, we found this place.’ And I say, ‘Okay, I’m ready.'”

Stamos entered a 30-day addiction program in July 2015. He told Bialik he was ready to change after hating the person he had become.

“I hated it. I really hated the way I felt, I hated letting people down, I hated myself, I hated looking in the mirror saying, ‘This is not what my parents brought up’. What am I doing? Who is this idiot?’ I would be so embarrassed,” he said on the podcast. “I had everything growing up. I had a nice childhood. I had no excuse to screw up my life. And I did and I got sick.”

Stamos talks about his alcohol addiction and recovery in his first memoir, If you had told me.
