John Thomas Sweeney is best known as a criminal. He dated American actress Dominique Dunne, whom he strangled on October 30, 1982, during an argument in the driveway of her home in West Hollywood.

John Thomas Sweeney met American actress Dominique Dunne at a party in 1981 and after a few weeks they started a relationship. They later moved into a one-bedroom house on Rangley Avenue in West Hollywood together.

Their relationship deteriorated due to his jealousy and possessiveness and they often fought. He started physically harassing her.
On October 30, 1982, John and Dominique ended their relationship. While she was talking to a friend on the phone, John had the operator cut in on the conversation. Dominique said to her friend,
“Oh God, it’s Sweeney. Let me get it off the phone.”
After 10 minutes, John appeared at Dominique’s home. She agreed to talk to him on the porch while Packer stayed inside. On the porch, Dominique and John began arguing and Packer heard banging, two screams, and a thump.
Packer called the police but got no help. He phoned a friend and told him that if he was found dead, Dominique’s boyfriend’s ex-boyfriend John Thomas Sweeney was his killer.
Packe approached the driveway and saw John in the nearby bushes kneeling over Dominique. John told Packer to call the police and when the police arrived, John met them in the driveway and said:
“I killed my girlfriend and I tried to kill myself.”
John testified that he and his girlfriend, Dominique, had been fighting, but he only remembers being on top of her with his arms around her neck.
Dominique was placed on life support at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The doctors did a brain scan and found that there was no brain activity. She passed away on November 4, 1982. Her mother donated Dominique’s kidneys and heart to transplant recipients.
Dominique’s funeral was held on November 6, 1982 at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills. Her body was interred at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery.
John was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor for arguing with Dominique. On November 7, 1982, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison for manslaughter.
He was incarcerated at a medium security prison in Susanville, California and was released on parole in September 1986 after serving only 3 years, 7 months and 27 days.
He got a job as head chef at a fancy restaurant in Santa Monica, California. Dominique’s brother and her mother handed out flyers to visitors outside the restaurant that read:
“The food you will eat tonight was cooked by the hands that killed Dominique Dunne.”

In the mid-1990s, a Florida doctor informed Dominique’s father, Dominick Dunne, that his daughter had recently become engaged to a chef named John Sweeney and inquired if the man was the same man who killed Dominique.
That John is identified as the same John. Dominique’s brother Griffin contacted John’s fiancee and asked her to reconsider her decision.
John accused the Dunnes of bullying him and changed his name to “John Maura” and moved to the Pacific Northwest. He works as a chef in the Pacific Northwest.
